Water Cremation

Aquamation, or alkaline hydrolysis, is a gentle and eco-friendly alternative to traditional pet aftercare. In this process, the pet's remains are placed in a specially designed vessel filled with a solution of 95% water and 5% alkali. The combination of flowing water, increased temperature, and alkalinity accelerates the breakdown of organic materials.

Environmental Benefits

The aquamation process offers significant environmental advantages, including over 90% energy savings compared to flame cremation, 1/10th of the environmental impact, and zero direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gases or mercury. The water used in the process is equivalent to that of 2 to 3 pet baths, and it's all recycled through the local sanitation system, further minimizing the ecological footprint.

Comparison with Traditional Flame Cremation and Burial

Compared to traditional methods, aquamation is a more sustainable choice. It avoids burning fossil fuels, reduces environmental impact, and eliminates the release of harmful emissions. The resulting remains consist of 96% water and 4% amino acids, sugars, nutrients, salts, and soap, providing a safe and eco-friendly solution.

The Chemical Process

Alkaline Hydrolysis

Alkaline hydrolysis is the scientific term for the aquamation process. It involves the use of alkalis, specifically sodium and potassium hydroxide, in a solution that facilitates the breakdown of organic materials.

Use of Alkalis in the Process

The same alkalis used in cosmetic products, body washes, shaving creams, and food preparation are employed in aquamation. These alkalis help break the molecular bonds in the remains, allowing for a gentle and efficient decomposition process.

Neutralization of Chemicals and Water Solution

By the end of the aquamation process, the alkalis are completely neutralized, and no traces remain in the water solution. This ensures the solution is safe and environmentally friendly, similar to the slow cleansing of a creek.
